Everything you need to know about tracking mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — permits, fitness, and what to expect.

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is one of the most profound wildlife experiences on Earth. Here is what you need to know before you go.

Where to Go

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park are the two locations in Uganda where you can trek gorillas. Bwindi has the majority of habituated families.

Permits

A gorilla permit costs $700 per person per trek. Only 8 visitors are allowed per gorilla family per day, so booking well in advance is essential.

Fitness

Treks can last anywhere from 2 to 8 hours through steep, muddy terrain. A reasonable level of fitness is required. Porters are available to hire for $15-20.

What to Expect

Once you find the gorillas, you spend one magical hour observing them. The experience is strictly regulated to protect the animals and minimize stress.

Best Time

The dry seasons (June to August and December to February) offer easier trekking conditions, but gorilla trekking is possible year-round.
